Apply for the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP). The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) is a fellowship program for African institutions in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda to host an African-born scholar to work in projects in research collaboration, graduate student teaching/mentoring and curriculum co-development. The application process has two parts.

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) is a scholar fellowship program for educational projects at African higher education institutions. Offered by IIE in collaboration with the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), the program is funded by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY). A total of 471 African Diaspora Fellowships have been awarded for scholars to travel to Africa since the program’s inception in 2013. CADFP exemplifies CCNY’s enduring commitment to higher education in Africa. IIE manages and administers the program, including applications, project requests and fellowships. USIU-Africa provides strategic direction through the Advisory Council

Benefits

The Fellowship provides:

  1. a $150/day stipend
  2. visa costs (if required)
  3. supplemental health insurance coverage
  4. round-trip international air travel and ground transportation costs to and from the scholar’s home to the North American airport
  5. potential opportunities to apply for supplemental funding to cover knowledge production activities and workshop attendance.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the CADFP, a scholar must:

  1. Be African-born academics currently living in the United States or Canada and working at institutions of higher education can submit a Scholar
  2. Have been born in any African country, as evidenced by the biographical data in the scholar’s passport;
  3. Live in the United States or Canada;
  4. Hold a terminal degree; and 
  5. Be employed at an accredited college or university.

Application

Multiple types of fellowships are possible under the CADFP, but all potential hosts will be highly encouraged to propose one or two of the following activities:

  • Innovations in curriculum co-development. 
  • New approaches and methods to graduate mentoring and training. 
  • Impactful research collaboration and capacity strengthening.
