Every year students Choose Canada as their study or research destination and explore the scholarship opportunities offered by Canada and other organisations to support the best and brightest to achieve their goals and dreams Canada. One of such programs is the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarships program which provide students from Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research, in Canada, at the college, undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Global Affairs Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) is proud to announce the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) for Latin America and the Caribbean for the year 2022. Only Canadian institutions can submit applications on behalf of candidates. They may choose to set their own internal deadline to receive supporting documentation.
As a requirement for this program, Canadian institutions are:
- Responsible for submitting applications on behalf of eligible candidates from institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean; and
- Encouraged to promote this scholarship opportunity to faculty and staff members, as well as to partner institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Benefits
Depending on the duration and level of study, the scholarship benefits are arranged as below
- CAD 8,200 for students applying for college, undergraduate or graduate students (Master’s and PhD). This is valid for a minimum of four months or one academic term of study or research
- A grant amount worth CAD 11,100 for students applying for graduate students (Master’s and PhD) for a period of five to six months of study or research.
- The Canadian host institution may also claim CAD 500 per scholarship recipient to assist with administrative costs once the scholarship recipient arrives in Canada.
The scholarship funds will be allocated and directed towards:
- Cater for living expenses, such as accommodation, utilities and food for selected students
- Facilitate ground transportation, such as public transportation pass
- Help students secure visa and work permit.
- Facilitate airfare travel for scholarship recipients to and from Canada.
- Secure health insurance for scholarship recipients
- Facilitate provisions and materials including books and other supplies required for the recipient’s study or research.
Eligibility
Below is the list of eligible countries:
- Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos;
- Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama;
- North America: Mexico
- South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela.
Candidates selected for the scholarship:
- You must be currently engage in full-time studies or research as defined by the Canadian institution.
- Applicants must demonstrate proof of proficient in the language of instruction at the Canadian institution (English or French) before their arrival in Canada.
- Students can apply for any program with the exception of pharmacy, medicine, dentistry or other health fields which are excluded from clinical training or clinically-oriented research involving direct patient-care.
- Applicants must hold any other scholarship granted by the Government of Canada;
- Upon completion of their studies, scholarship recipients are expected to return to complete their studies at their home institutions.

Application
Applications for this scholarship programme are submitted by Canadian institutions of behave of the applicants. You are therefore advised to contact your preferred institution in Canada and express your interest in participating in the programme.
Upon recipient and verifying your eligibility for the programme, the Canadian institution will complete and submit your application using the programme online application portal. The following documents will be needed to complete your application.
- The candidate’s proof of citizenship
- A privacy Notice Statement signed by the applicant
- Letter of intent from the candidate
- A Letter from the applicant’s home institution as proof of full-time enrolment
- Letter of support from the home institution
- Signed copy of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or Agreement with the partner institution
