Apply for the ACMS DAAD Masters and PhD Scholarships at University of the Witwatersrand. The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at the University of the Witwatersrand is now accepting applications for MA and PhD scholarships. These scholarships are offered by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) through the In-Region Scholarship Programme South Africa.
Applicants can opt for full scholarships available for Four(4) MA and Five(5) PhD for students accepted for the Migration and Displacement programme at ACMS for the 2022/23 academic year. The main aim of this programme is based on fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development.
This scholarship programme is therefore dedicated to applicants from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with the exception of South Africa. Eligible candidates who wish to apply for the MA programme must have completed an Undergraduate degree and those for the PhD programme must have completed a Master’s degree.
The scholarships are offered at University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, at the African Centre for Migration and Displacement (ACMS) in the following fields:
- PhD in Migration and Displacement Studies
- Master in Migration and Displacement Studies
Selected students under this scholarship programme will also have the opportunity to attend short research term stays in Germany ranging from 3 to 6 months. Also, there are opportunities to attend different Summer schools in Germany and training opportunities all sponsored by the programme.
Benefits
Benefits for applicants are as below.
- Selected applicants will receive the annual tuition fee coverage for the selected programme.
- You will receive a Study and Research allowance worth 460 EUR for Masters and 920 EUR for PhD.
- Selected scholarship recipients will receive a Monthly Scholarship Stipend worth 450 EUR for Masters and 500 EUR for PhD, to cover you accommodation and daily living expenses.
- You will also be eligible for a Travel allowance to cover your travel costs from and back to your home country.
- Students will receive an annual insurance coverage for the entire duration of stay in South Africa.
- You will also receive a printing allowance towards the end of your studies, worth 400 EUR for Master’s and 800 EUR for PhD
In addition, Students who apply to attend short research stays in Germany will receive a scholarship covering the following:
- A monthly scholarship stipend to cover their living expenses
- Travel allowance for their travels from South Africa (Host University) to Germany and back
- Health and personal liability insurance for the entire duration of the research stay.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must fulfill the following criteria
- You must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa).
- Applicants applying for the MA programme must have completed a first degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application.
- Students applying for the MA programme must have graduated with an Honours degree or equivalent with a total aggregate mark of at least 65%
- For PhD applicants, they must have an MA degree (Not more than 6 years ago) with a total aggregate mark of at least 70%.
- Female applicants as well as refugees with recognized refugee status in their countries of residence are particularly encouraged to apply
- All applicants must apply and receive admission to study for MA/PhD in Migration and Displacement at ACMS
Application
DAAD will make the final decisions and administer the scholarships. ACMS is in charge of the first phase of the application process which involves pre-selecting and shortlisting candidates. ACMS will submit the shortlist to DAAD for the second phase of the application process and final decisions.
The initial application process (Pre-selection) requires you to submit the following required documents to the University of the Witwatersrand.
- Applicants must submit a cover letter detailing your qualifications, professional experience and reasons for interest in the Migration and Displacement programme.
- You must submit a recent CV.
- include Copies of transcripts and degree certificates.
- SAQA evaluation (for foreign qualifications).
- Applicants will be required to present a short research proposal of around 1500 words maximum outlining their proposed research project.
- You must also present a writing sample (such as a chapter, article or term paper) of not more than 10,000 words.
